An Ancient Living Art

Jin Shin The Art of the Creator

Harmony is your birthright. Your hands hold the key. Your breath is the door.

Explore
What It Is

A Natural Path to Balance

Jin Shin Jyutsu is a gentle, non-invasive healing art that harmonizes the flow of life energy through the body. Unlike techniques that require pressure or manipulation, it works through conscious, still touch โ€” the simple, intentional placement of the hands on specific points along the body's energy pathways.

There are no needles, no instruments, and no force. Only awareness, presence, and breath. The art teaches that all disharmony in the body โ€” whether physical pain, emotional turbulence, or mental fatigue โ€” is a signal that energy has become stagnant or blocked. By gently releasing those blocks, the body can return to its natural state of vitality and ease.

What makes Jin Shin Jyutsu remarkable is this: you do not need a practitioner to experience it. The entire art can be learned as a daily self-help practice. Your own two hands are your most powerful tools.

Origins

Older Than Written History

According to records preserved in Japan's Imperial Palace archives, the knowledge underlying Jin Shin Jyutsu predates written civilization โ€” older than the Kojiki (712 A.D.), the time of Moses, and the birth of Gautama Buddha. For generations, this wisdom traveled not through books but through breath and spoken teaching. Over centuries it quietly faded from common awareness โ€” until one extraordinary moment in the early twentieth century brought it back to life.

Ancient Times

The Original Knowing

Before written language, healers understood that life energy moves through the body in precise pathways. This wisdom was transmitted orally โ€” sacred, experiential, and alive โ€” for thousands of years.

Centuries Passed

Knowledge Fades

As Japan modernized, the ancient oral healing traditions gradually fell away from common practice โ€” stored only in the Imperial archives and a few remaining sacred texts. The art became nearly lost to the world.

1886

Jiro Murai Is Born

A Japanese philosopher, scholar, and passionate researcher is born. Murai would grow into a man of extraordinary intellect and spiritual curiosity โ€” and would one day face a crisis that changed everything.

Early 1900s

The Great Illness

Murai contracted a serious, life-threatening illness. Physicians declared his condition terminal. In his final days, he requested solitude in a mountain cabin and began a profound experiment in self-healing โ€” meditating, fasting, and applying mudras from ancient texts he had studied.

The Turning Point

Murai's Miraculous Recovery

On the seventh day of his solitary practice, Murai felt an overwhelming heat move through his body โ€” followed by a deep and complete stillness. He emerged from the cabin fully recovered. His life's mission became clear: to understand, document, and share this ancient healing knowledge with all of humanity.

1940sโ€“1950s

Mary Burmeister Arrives

A young American woman named Mary Burmeister traveled to Japan as a translator. There she met Jiro Murai, who told her: "Would you like to be a gift to God, a gift to man, and a gift to yourself?" Mary said yes โ€” and became Murai's most devoted student, studying with him for twelve years.

1950s โ€“ USA

The Art Crosses the Pacific

Mary Burmeister returned to the United States and quietly began sharing Jin Shin Jyutsu. Working first with family and close friends, her reputation grew through results alone. She became the bridge that carried this ancient art into the Western world.

1970sโ€“1990s

A Living Lineage

Mary formally established Jin Shin Jyutsu, Inc. in Scottsdale, Arizona, and began training teachers and practitioners. Haruki Kato, Murai's niece, carried the lineage in Japan. The art slowly spread across Europe, the Americas, and beyond โ€” person by person, hand by hand.

Today

A Global Healing Movement

Jin Shin Jyutsu is now practiced in dozens of countries, taught in certified seminars, and integrated into hospitals, wellness centers, and personal homes worldwide. The self-help practice in particular has made these tools available to anyone willing to place their hands and breathe.

A Japanese philosopher who healed himself from terminal illness using ancient mudras and breathing techniques. Murai spent the rest of his life researching the Imperial archives and codifying the 26 Safety Energy Locks, the flows, and the self-help practices that form the foundation of modern Jin Shin Jyutsu. He gave this knowledge freely, asking only that it be shared with humanity.

Bridge to the West ยท 1918โ€“2008

Born in Seattle, Mary traveled to post-war Japan where fate connected her with Jiro Murai. Over twelve years of devoted study she mastered his teachings and became the person who made Jin Shin Jyutsu accessible to Western culture. She authored the foundational study texts that remain the primary learning materials today, and founded Jin Shin Jyutsu, Inc. in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Haruki Kato

Japanese Guardian of the Lineage

Murai's niece and spiritual heir in Japan, Haruki Kato preserved and transmitted the art within her native country. While Mary brought Jin Shin Jyutsu west, Haruki ensured it remained rooted in its Japanese cultural and spiritual foundation. Together, these two women became the living pillars of a lineage that now reaches every corner of the world.

The 26 Energy Locations on the body

Just as a fuse protects an electrical system from overload, in the Art of Jin Shin, the body has 26 specific points that lock when energy flow becomes excessive or stagnant, protecting the body from greater harm. A practitioner or a self-help practitioner gently holds these points to restore flow. Here is a brief guide to each: Note the colors of each point suports a Depth in Jin Shin. Energy spirals through the body deeper and deeper. Please book a Jin Shin Session to learn more...

You don't need to memorize all 26 to begin. In a single session, a practitioner reads the body and selects which locks to hold. In self-help practice, you can start with just the finger holds (below) and experience immediate results. Understanding the energy locks deepens over time โ€” this is a lifelong art, not a one-day course.

Daily Self-Help Practice

The Finger Holds

One of the most accessible self-help tools in Jin Shin is the simple practice of holding each finger. Each finger corresponds to a specific organ function, emotional pattern, and energy flow. Holding a finger for 2โ€“5 minutes โ€” or simply until you feel a gentle pulse โ€” harmonizes that entire energy channel throughout the body.

โœจ How to Practice the Finger Holds

  1. Find a comfortable seated or lying position. Close your eyes if possible.
  2. With one hand, gently wrap your fingers around the finger you are holding โ€” thumb included in a light, relaxed grasp.
  3. Breathe slowly and naturally. You do not need to force anything.
  4. Hold for 2โ€“5 minutes per finger, or until you feel a gentle, rhythmic pulse beneath your fingertips.
  5. You can hold all five fingers on one hand, then move to the other โ€” this completes a full self-help cycle.
  6. Practice any time: while watching TV, before sleep, in the morning, or whenever you feel called to.
Working With a Practitioner

How a Session Works

What Happens During a Session

  • ๐Ÿ›๏ธYou lie fully clothed and comfortable on a massage table or mat
  • ๐ŸคฒThe practitioner places their hands on specific Energy points along the body โ€” holding two points at a time, listening for the pulse and flow
  • ๐Ÿ˜ŒSessions are quiet, deeply relaxing, and non-invasive โ€” there is no pressure, no manipulation, and no discomfort
  • โฑ๏ธA typical session lasts 60โ€“90 minutes, though shorter self-help sessions are equally beneficial
  • ๐Ÿ’ฌThe practitioner may ask about what you are experiencing โ€” physically, emotionally, or in your life generally โ€” to guide the session

What to Expect

  • ๐ŸŒŠDeep, wave-like relaxation โ€” many clients fall into a meditative state or sleep
  • ๐ŸŒก๏ธSensations of warmth, tingling, or pulsing in the body as energy begins to move
  • ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จSpontaneous deep sighs or yawns โ€” signs that the nervous system is releasing
  • ๐Ÿ’งEmotional release may occur โ€” this is natural, welcomed, and supported
  • โœจA feeling of lightness, clarity, or renewed energy after the session ends

My36Breaths & Jin Shin

Why This Art Is at the Heart of Everything We Do

I came to Jin Shin Jyutsu not as a student looking for certification โ€” I came as a human being looking for answers.

As a life coach, wellness practitioner, mother, and artist, I have spent years exploring the relationship between the body, the breath, and the soul's capacity for healing. Jin Shin Jyutsu was the art that brought it all together.

What moved me most was this: you don't need a practitioner to begin. The art is designed to be self-taught, self-applied, and self-sustaining. That principle became the heartbeat of My36Breaths โ€” the belief that every person already holds within them the intelligence to restore their own harmony.

Jin Shin is woven into everything at My36Breaths: our coaching programs, our self-help courses, our breathwork sessions, and our approach to emotional empowerment for families and individuals navigating stress, change, and the beautiful chaos of modern life.

This is not a technique. It is a way of living โ€” one breath, one hold, one moment of stillness at a time.
